It's amazing what you can find on the Web and all the merchandising associated with the movie "Titanic". I found the official James Cameron Titanic Tub Toy for only $29.95 with working lights. Andie loves it. And it's guaranteed not to sink!
Thoughts
Metamorphosis. Getting ready for bed is a small production ; fixing shorts, legs, feet, shoulders, arms, hands, fingers, head, pillow, blankets, etc. I try to get as comfortable as possible while laying on my back, because I will be there for the next 10 hours. At night, I'm pretty tired and lay there unmoving for about 5 hours. As my body rests and recharges, it now becomes restless. Me and my legs begin to stir. With the help of a cold shiver or a yawn, all the muscles contract. Automatically, my legs jerk and flex at the knee and partially at the hip. Ahhh! This feels good. I drift back to sleep. Not more than an hour passes, when I stir again because of a dull throbbing pain in my bent joints. I now need to extend my legs straight. (Extension of my muscles is easy. Contracttion is very difficult to do when I purposely try.) So, I push my feet to the bottom of the bed. This process repeats a few times as I begin to slowly wake from deep sleep. When I finally wake up, I'm on my back, legs straight, arms sometimes by my side or slightly wedged under my body, with a dull ache of stiffness in the elbow from not being bent all night. I then attempt to roll to one side, move an arm or leg to no avail. I feel like a defenseless, overturned beetle or turtle. So,I call out to Cali with a groan.
My situation reminds me each morning of the Franz Kafka short story "The Metamorphosis". It starts out: 'AS GREGOR SAMSA awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect. He was lying on his hard, as it were armor-plated, back ...''Gregor then thinks: 'What about sleeping a little longer and forgetting all this nonsense, he thought, but it could not be done, for he was accustomed to sleep on his right side and in his present condition he could not turn himself over. However violently he forced himself towards his right side he always rolled on to his back again. He tried it at least a hundred times, shutting his eyes to keep from seeing his struggling legs, and only desisted when he began to feel in his side a faint dull ache he had never experienced before.' And when he attempted to speak: 'Gregor had a shock as he heard his own voice answering hers, unmistakably his own voice, it was true, but with a persistent horrible twittering squeak behind it like an undertone, that left the words in their clear shape only for the first moment and then rose up reverberating round them to destroy their sense, so that one could not be sure one had heard them rightly. Gregor wanted to answer at length and explain everything,...' It's a really bizarre story alright, but I totally relate to it. For some reason I never forgot it since I read it in high school. I now think about it often.
'What has happened to me? he thought. It was no dream.' No , it isn't.
